Mother Nature Served the Rain, JCI Brantford Served the Breakfast
JCI Branttord held it's first ever "Breakfast in Brant Park" fundraiser, on Saturday, July 11, 2009.
Mother Nature gave the organizing committee a sense of false hope, when Co-Chairs Ross Forsyth and Michelle Miller stepped out of their respective homes at 6 that morning, to find bright blue skies, a few white fluffy clouds and an already warm breeze in the air. Just a couple of hours later, the original 'open air' serving site at Brant Park Conservation Area was set up, dark clouds rolled in, and everyone hustled to a sheltered area, moments before the sky opened up.
"It was a surprise to look up all of a sudden to see the sky turn black, but as soon as we heard the thunder, JCI Brantford members were quick to tear down and set up again under cover" says Forsyth. "But in true JCI fashion, we were able to make the move in under 10 minutes, and no one was the wiser- until now!" he finishes with a laugh.
All in all, Miller says, “ the event was a huge success- some people showed up, regardless of the rain, while others called the hotline to confirm we were going ahead. The kids didn’t seem to mind the weather at all- we had a great entertainer singing and interacting with everyone with his puppet; the clowns were kept busy with face painting and balloon animals. Once the rain let up around 9:15, the inflatable castle was opened up, and the kids had a blast in there. With the rain, the slide turned into a mini waterslide- the kids were going in dry, coming out dripping!”
Event Sponsors, John Oddi and David de Dominicis from Royal le Page Action Realty, were also present, helping out and enjoying the morning. Oddi spent the morning assisting the cooks at the Crown Verity tailgate trailer BBQ and watching the fun everyone was having. “Next year, no rain!” was his remark, after stating he would gladly be back next year, supporting this great event, assisting in part the Charity of Hope.
A portion of proceeds raised from this year’s Breakfast will be going to the Charity of Hope,
For those who attended, THANKS! For those who were unable to make it out, we’ll see you next year!
The 2010 Breakfast in Brant Park has been scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2010. We will be undercover again, in the “Parkview Pavillion” at Brant Park. Please watch for more information; Tickets will go on sale in May next year!
Many thanks to all our sponsors and supporters;

Local Senator "Jailed" for a good cause
JCI Brantford Senator Syd Bolton was recently arrested, brought before a judge, and eventually thrown into a jail cell at the Lynden Park Mall on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Not to fear, it was all for a good cause. Crimestoppers, which receives no government funding for the rewards it gives to tipsters regarding crimes, has run the "Jail and Bail" for three years now.
Bolton, who was charged with "Playing games and having too much fun at work" showed up with counsel, fellow Senator Paul Oddi who defended him as much as possible. The situation was exacerbated by Bolton as he played with his PSP during the hearing, which did not impress the Judge - his honour Chris Friel (former mayor of Brantford).
Bail was set initially at $400, but Friel added an additional $200 to the amount citing Bolton's Expositor articles as the source of frustration to him. Bolton had brought in $360 in bail money and had to work quickly from his jail cell to raise the additional funds.
His stay was made slightly more pleasant by the company he had. Not long after being incarcerated, Bolton was soon joined by none other than Walter Gretzky. "It was a pleasure to be in here with him" Bolton said in an interview afterwards. "It's rare to get a chance to talk to Walter where he can't get away". The two were then spotted later with their heads sticking out between the bars.
In the end, Bolton was released upon raising $760 through phone calls and some sheer begging to the public that was present. A few more donations followed, bringing the grand total raised to $800.
If you are interested in helping out, you still can. Just drop off a cheque made out to "Brant-Brantford Crimestoppers" to the police station, and in the memo field put something like "Keep Syd Bolton in Jail".
Effective Speaking Competition Winner Announced
At our May dinner meeting, the Chair of the JCI Brantford Effective Speaking Competition (Aaron DeMille) announced our winner - JCI Senator Syd Bolton! On April 2nd it was a tightly contested match between our competitors and Syd came out on top. Now Syd will go on to compete against the winners from other Chapters in the Great Lakes Region and the winner from that goes up against representatives from across Canada. It doesn't end there, the winner from Canada takes on other countries in the Americas and then goes on to the world competition. It is an extremely high caliber event. Congratulations Syd and good luck as you move forward.
Another new member inducted
JCI Brantford would like to welcome its newest member, Michelle Giffin. Michelle has taken on the role of organizing our dinner meetings and did a great job at her first one in April. Michelle was introduced to the Chapter by Senator Syd Bolton.
